Can you give away copyrighted stuff for donations?

I've been planning on signing up to be an exchange student with Rotary,so I've been trying to brainstorm ideas on how to raise money via selling stuff and donations. I've come up with a few ideas, but I'm not sure one's legal.(he he) You see, I've recently taken up crocheting, and was thinking of making hats,dolls,etc and giving them away for donations a my local farmers market. I found some patterns online, a few of them of copy-righted characters(Pooh, Cthulu etc.) Would it be legal to give these characters away for free in exchange for a donation?
