So you have this DNA strand which has to be transcribed and translated into a protein. RNA Polymerase reads in the 5' -> 3' direction to make an mRNA strand, which goes outside the nucleus to a ribosome made of rRNA, matches up with an approriate anti-codon, and hooks together polypeptides. You should be able to find the chart online or what codon corresponds to what amino acid. And yes, most (if not all) proteins start with methionine.
